Initiatives for Transitional Assistance for Shelter (ITAS)

Description

Through the Initiatives for Transitional Assistance for Shelter (ITAS) program, funded by OFDA, ADRA aims to provide 3,125 IDPs in the Rural Damascus region with adequate, safe shelter solutions. ADRA primarily uses a private shelter upgrade approach to house IDP individuals, households and families. Existing, unfinished buildings (usually apartment buildings under construction at the onset of the crisis) were identified, or were already being used by IDPs as shelters.  ADRA then provides basic materials and construction to make them suitable for habitation, in line with Sphere and Shelter Sector agreed upon standards. Shelter upgrades come complete with appropriate water access, sanitation facilities and complementary hygiene promotion. Gender and protection considerations are at the forefront of both the technical implementation (including lockable areas within shelters) and grouping of families that will share common areas and facilities.
